What to do in Grenoble in 48 hours?

Grenoble is a wonderful city to explore on foot, especially from the station district: the entire historic center is within a fifteen-minute walk, and the mountains literally start at the end of the streets. Here's a tried-and-tested itinerary for a 48-hour weekend.

This guide starts from the studio, but it works for any visitor: allow one day for the Bastille and the historic heart, one day for museums and local life. And extend if the mountains call.

Day 1: the Bastille and the historic heart

Start with the city's icon: the Grenoble-Bastille cable car and its famous « bubbles », climbing from the city center up to the fort. At the top, a panorama over the whole Grenoble basin, the Vercors, the Chartreuse and, on a clear day, Mont Blanc. Walk back down through the Guy Pape park trails to reach the banks of the Isère. In the afternoon, head to old Grenoble: Place Saint-André, Place Grenette, the Jardin de Ville, alleys and cafés. All within a 15-20 minute walk from the studio.

Day 2: museums and local life

The Musée de Grenoble is one of France's great art museums, from ancient art to exceptional modern and contemporary collections. On the slopes of the Bastille, the Musée Dauphinois (free entry) tells the story of the Alps and their people in a former convent. In between, stroll through the market, try the terraces of Place aux Herbes, and finish at Paul Mistral park around the Perret tower. A peaceful, very Grenoble Sunday.

Craving mountains?

It's the local specialty: within 30 to 45 minutes you're in the Chartreuse, the Vercors or at Chamrousse: panoramic hikes in summer, skiing in winter, with seasonal coaches from the neighboring bus station to several destinations. The station district is the ideal base for this program: the historic center 15 minutes on foot, the cable car 20, all four tram lines 2 minutes away, and the train station 5-10 minutes away to arrive and leave without a car. The studio adds what makes a good weekend: quiet, a real kitchen for breakfasts, and mountain views when you wake up.
